Utilizamos this para indicar um objeto que fica mais perto do enunciador, enquanto a forma that indica
certa distância entre nós e o objeto.
Exemplo:
*This old book here is mine, not that new car.
Este velho livro aqui é o meu, não aquele novo.

*That one over there looks interesting.
Aquele lá parece interessante.

É fundamental lembrar que this e that têm suas formas de plural, que são respectivamente these e those:
Exemplo:
*These grapes are very tasty, better than those you bought last week.
 Estas uvas são deliciosas, melhor do que aquelas que você comprou na semana passada.
